Scripturewell brings together Bible text, study tools and links from several sources. This page lists each source, who it belongs to, and whether Scripturewell displays it, links to it, summarizes it or hosts a copy. Scripturewell does not claim ownership of anyone else’s work. Where a license or permission has not been confirmed yet, this page says so.
Bible text
When you open a chapter, Scripturewell asks the outside service bolls.life for the text and displays it. Scripturewell does not keep its own copy of these Bible versions. The exceptions are King James Version verses you add to Verse Memory, saved on your device, and a short built-in list of well-known verses used for the Verse of the day reminder (hosts). Status: that built-in list does not yet say which translation it comes from.
English Standard Version (ESV)
ESV® Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version®), © 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. All rights reserved. The edition returned by the current service and permission for this app's usage have not been verified. Scripturewell does not assert “used by permission.”
Notice wording from Crossway’s permissions page. Status: Scripturewell has not yet confirmed permission to display full chapters of the ESV.
New Living Translation (NLT)
Holy Bible, New Living Translation, copyright ©1996, 2004, 2015 by Tyndale House Foundation. All rights reserved. Scripturewell has not verified a permission grant for this implementation.
Notice wording from Tyndale’s permissions page. Status: Scripturewell has not yet confirmed permission to display full chapters of the NLT.
New International Version (NIV)
The Holy Bible, New International Version® NIV®. Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984, 2011 by Biblica, Inc. All rights reserved worldwide. Scripturewell has not verified a permission grant for this implementation.
Notice wording from Biblica’s permissions page. Status: Scripturewell has not yet confirmed permission to display full chapters of the NIV.
King James Version (KJV)
The King James Version is generally treated as public domain in the United States. In the United Kingdom, rights in the Authorized (King James) Version are vested in the Crown and administered by Cambridge University Press (Cambridge rights and permissions). This is general information, not legal advice.
Hebrew and Greek texts in Translate mode
Translate mode displays the Westminster Leningrad Codex (WLC) for the Old Testament and the Nestle-Aland 28th edition (NA28) for the New Testament, also requested from bolls.life. Status: the copyright and permission terms for these texts in Scripturewell have not yet been confirmed.
Some studies quote Bible passages inside their text. Newer context and Passage Questions tools separate summaries, background and interpretation. Older studies do not consistently separate these categories or provide a source for every claim; they require editorial review before release.
Bible audio and narration
Scripturewell does not use recorded human Bible readings. When you tap Listen or download audio, the Scripturewell server turns the text into speech using Microsoft’s online speech service, or Google’s speech service if that fails, and displays (plays) the result. A small number of chapters are kept as ready-made audio files on the server (hosts). Narrator names in the app are the names of computer voices. Status: Scripturewell uses these speech services through public web endpoints and has not yet confirmed terms for this use; the audio is also subject to the Bible text permissions above.
Lexicon data
Strong’s Hebrew and Greek dictionaries
The lexicon uses digital editions of James Strong’s Hebrew dictionary (1894) and Greek dictionary (1890). Scripturewell hosts copies of these files and displays entries from them.

These notices are copied from the headers of the data files Scripturewell uses. The exact Creative Commons version is not stated in those headers.
Word studies, vocabulary lists, alphabet notes and the short glossary are written for Scripturewell (summarizes). Glossary and Book Context entries link to the outside sources they are based on.
Maps, timelines, images and icons
- Map tool: Leaflet 1.9.4, © Volodymyr Agafonkin and CloudMade, under the BSD 2-Clause License for this version. Loaded from unpkg.
- Map images: street map tiles from Esri, shown with the credit “Tiles © Esri” on the map (displays). Status: Esri’s full attribution and terms for this map service have not yet been confirmed.
- Place markers, timelines and the family line from Adam to Jesus: compiled for Scripturewell from the Bible passages listed with each entry.
- Fonts: Cinzel, Cinzel Decorative, EB Garamond and Inter from Google Fonts. Google states that all Google Fonts are open source and that it only adds fonts licensed under the SIL Open Font License (Google Fonts FAQ).
- App icon, logo and interface icons: supplied in this project. A complete provenance and rights record for the raster icons has not been verified. Story cards use standard emoji drawn by your device.
Content written for Scripturewell
Daily studies, word studies, Kids story retellings, reading plans, Book Context summaries, Passage Questions answers and Family devotions are written for Scripturewell. Many list the sources they draw on. Newer tools label Scripturewell summaries separately from Bible text; older studies do not consistently do so and some list only general sources. These older materials still require editorial review.
Teaching Library and outside links
The Teaching Library links to free teaching on official provider websites. It does not copy, embed or host any videos, podcasts, courses or articles.
- What Scripturewell writes: the title, length and passages are taken from the provider’s official page; the short summary and “why included” note are Scripturewell’s own wording. These details are shown separately from the provider’s content, which you see only on their website.
- Review: each resource was checked on its official page before it was added. Each card shows a “last reviewed” date, which is the day those details were last checked by hand, not a live check. The plan is to recheck links by hand about every six months, or sooner when a problem is found.
- BibleProject: resources link to bibleproject.com. BibleProject’s Terms of Use describe free, non-commercial use. A link does not mean BibleProject endorses Scripturewell.
- Study links: Book Context, the glossary and Passage Questions link to Encyclopaedia Britannica, GotQuestions.org and Merriam-Webster pages, labelled by name. Those sites own their content.
- Reports: “Report broken link or source concern” saves the report only on this device. Nothing is sent. You can copy a report and share it yourself.
What you create
Your notes, prayer journal entries, saved questions and Verse Memory notes are not published by Scripturewell. Storage is local, or temporary when the browser blocks storage. Online narration sends Bible verse or Kids story text, not your private writing, to speech services; see Listening and privacy. Backups contain your writing and verse references, not stored Bible text. Download one from Backup and Restore.
